An understanding of both identities is necessary if we want black LGBTQ+ people to feel seen, loved and valued. Racism and homophobia may not be two sides of the same coin but for those of us that are Black and LGBTQ+ they both play a role in limiting our opportunities for happiness and success. Which is why it is so important that we take the time to reflect on the personal obstacles that could have prevented a wedding like Jamal (Jussie Smollett) and Kai’s (Toby Onwumere) from occurring in the first place. Our identities are often depicted as being separate, sometimes competing, which prevents non queer black people from acknowledging the complexities we face as Black gay men. But when those things occur together it reinforces a crucial sentiment – black culture and gay culture can coexist. On the surface, a gay bachelor party that includes a drag performance, or a Black wedding where the newlyweds jump the broom might not seem novel.īoth examples have historical significance to each respective culture.
